East of Essex is an ongoing photographic and moving-image project made from a single fixed position on the Essex coast. Looking east across the water towards continental Europe, the same apparently uneventful view is photographed repeatedly through changing tides, seasons, weather and light.
The work embraces restriction: the camera remains fixed, the horizon bisects the frame, and nothing is sought beyond what happens to pass before it. Accumulated over time, these small variations become the subject of the work- an attempt to make something through repetition, stillness and, in a sense, actively un-creating.
